BNBLV - A History Lesson

About this time last year, Beer & Blog began to suffer growing pains, the weather was warming up, the pools were opening and tweetups and other events were popping up like crazy. Thursday night is a very popular event night and being that it is also the traditional Beer & Blog night, conflicts arose.
We settled in at Bar Louie after some issues with the Freakin Frog, and things went well for the most part, through out the summer. We had our good weeks and our bad weeks, but we survived thanks to a few people who shouldered the work load. Those people, Lori (@PokerVixen), Manya (@ManyaS), Pam (@StormyIz) & Sara (@Sara_Mooney) for the most part. I am not trying to make light of the many people who have helped in the past, this was always meant to be a democracy.

As summer turned to fall, we fell out with Bar Louie. They became increasingly less friendly, the service was horrible, the turn over in staff was giving us fits. It was time to once again move on and find a new venue that could accomodate us. However attendance was at an all time low and we began meeting in a small group at Gordon Biersch, things were in peril.

But I chose Gordon Biersch because it was close to my job, I could get their quickly, reserve the neccessary seats and if no one else showed up, which was often the case, at least I could get a good beer. For me personally, Beer & Blog has always been about the beer first and blogging second. My interest in craft beer was growing and as long as I was the main person organizing the event, I organized around the growing craft beer community in Las Vegas.

The holidays came and went and it was time to kick off the new year and try and get some fresh life pushed into Beer & Blog. We managed to pick up a few new people, who were interested in blogging and talking blogging. A rotating schedule of locations seemed to level out the attendance and we mended our fences with the Freakin Frog. We worked on deals with new places, things seemed like they were starting to click.

But Thursdays continued to be hampered by tweetups. But no one wanted to come together on a consensus for a new day or a schedule that was paired down to a couple weeks a month. People complained about the event not being on their side of town, not considering the people on the other side of town who have the same complaints. Facebook invites were ignored for the most part, to the point where it became useless to even send them out. Other events that were posted were generally ignored as well, and suddenly we find ourselves back on the cusp of summer and all those events that derailed us last May are back.

5 weeks in a row, there have been tweetups and other group gatherings, when up to 3/4 of your group attend these events it makes it hard to get people to just show up for a drink and chat. New comers who tweeted at the Beer & Blog twitter account were encouraged to attend, yet how they would find us, I have no idea. Big events came and went, with really no attendance of Beer & Blog people, sure they cost money. I get that can be a deterant, but you cannot claim nothing in is going on, just because you choose not to attend the event.

So now we get a bitter Twitter war because someone choose to bitch in public that they do not like how the volunteers are handling the situation. People who barely attend suddenly have something to say, where were all of you in the weeks and months of trying to get people to chime in and give input? Where are you when a venue needs to be locked up for a gathering? Where are you other than when you feel like showing up, to sit at tables someone else has saved, take advantage of specials someone else has negotiated or a location that someone else has scouted?

Finally we come to me, I have been trying to keep Beer & Blog afloat, for the most part only a few people really know the extent of that, apparently. I have talked endlessly to people, getting their input, trying to get them to help, and trying to make sure I was not stepping on any toes. I have sat by myself and held tables when no one has shown up and could not even be bothered to say they were not showing up. I have paid the unpaid bills when we got stuck on one check and people have not accounted for the %18 tax and gratuity we have often been hit with. I have blogged, I have tweeted, I have given up my Thursday nights just about every night of the past year and a half.

For the past month I have been in the middle of a bitter, draining situation with my job. It has required me to work endless amounts of overtime, put a lot of stress on my home life and generally driven me to the point where I barely blog or tweet. So as you may have guessed it has trickled down to Beer & Blog as well. I was announced before the LVIMA and #MGM Tweetup that there would be no Beer & Blog for those two weeks. The following week I was able to squeeze in a late organized Beer & Blog at McMullans, last week my work situation completely exploded and for the first time I was unable / unwilling to do anything about Beer & Blog.

At McMullans I had mentioned to several of the attendees my intent to open up my long standing Tuesday night visit to Gordon Biersch to the Beer & Blog peeps. That was to be started tonight, ironically enough. So there you are, you want to talk to me or bitch at me for what a shit job I am doing, come on down.

April - No Fools

April is upon us and time to start rolling out event ideas for the month, starting with tonight.  We will be heading to the Hofbrauhaus tonight for Beer & Blog, for the first time and hopefully not the last.

Let me stress that this is not a joke, but it is a rumor.  We have heard from reliable sources that Hofbrauhaus will be closing as soon as next week.  Again this is a rumor, not confirmed, but it is also not an April Fools joke and does come from a good source.  Take that how you will, but we felt a last minute change of venue was in order for this evening, hope lots of you can attend.

In the upcoming weeks, we have a potential Tapping Party at Gordon Biersch in Boca Park, at least one trip to the Freakin Frog, a possible new venue (working on details), as well as some interesting field trips.  I will have all the relevant details up just as soon as possible, tomorrow even I hope.

UPDATE:  As you can see in the comments section and now in the update, we have a confirmation that Hofbrauhaus is not going anywhere!   Yah!  Still glad we finally pulled a gathering there together, and based on the feedback on Twitter of folks unable to attend tonight, we will need to visit them again in the near future.

Wk12 - Twestival

Another Twestival came and went, we had a good turn out of Beer & Bloggers in support of the cause, Concern Worldwide.  The global event was able to beat last year's amount of money raised, but Las Vegas fell short of our individual goal.

We spent a large portion of the evening in the quaint Caramel Lounge, in the otherwise huge Bellagio Hotel & Casino.  After the event officially ended, the place began to fill up with a more club crowd, and we eventually made our ways home.

Thanks to everyone who showed up in support of the Twestival and Beer & Blog.

Wk11 - Gordon Biersch

After the crazy party at the Beer Festival, a Wed night St Patricks Day and the upcoming Twestival... we felt it was best to give our livers a day off.  So we took Week 11 off, but then had an impromptu gathering on Tuesday night at Gordon Biersch.

I cannot say it enough, Gordon Biersch is hands down the best happy hour in town and a great space.  The doors are starting to get rolled up and the beer garden is open as the weather is heating up in Vegas.

Beer & Blog Road Trip - Lake Las Vegas

We will be meeting at Whole Foods Market in Town Square at 12:30pm to caravan / carpool up to the event.  Here are some more details for those of you who have not attended before:

The Village at Lake Las Vegas and Buckbean Brewing Company will host Brew’s Best Hand-Crafted Beer Festival Saturday, March 13, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Taster kits are available for $25, which include 30 sampling tickets and a souvenir tasting mug. All proceeds will benefit local charity New Vista Community.

Wk10 - Big Dogs Draft House

We were at Big Dogs Draft House last night, for the Belgian White Tapping Party, very tasty little number, perfect for the inevitable hot weather in Vegas.  Also tried the Double Red, very hoppy and also quite excellent,  Big Dogs continues to roll out excellent craft beer.

A poor showing last night due to SXSW and the Festival on Saturday, all I can say is you don't know what you are missing by skipping the Draft House nights.  It truly is an institution in that part of town and you need to do yourself a favor and stop in one of these days.

Wk9 - ESPN Zone

As a follow up to Week 9, we have the after thought on the experiment and the evening.  One word, LEGEN - wait for it - DARY... really it was an awesome #BNBLV.

We all trickled into the over priced under staffed Pour 24 for a few pricey pours of good beer.  It is a casino and that is what you really need to do is keep telling yourself that when you visit one.  At any rate, I am happy to drink draft Ruination IPA and Anchor Steam whenever possible.

After a while we decided to go in search of food and since Nine Fine Irishmen was closed for a private party we ended up at the ESPN Zone.  It was late and we had a sizable crowd, but they did a good job handling our group.  Even granting us separate tabs after a bit of haggling with our good natured waiter.

We had a rocking time just laughing and goofing off, a lot of the goofing at the expense of our current Gowalla addiction.  None the less, good experiment.

Wk 9 - Pour 24

Trying a little something different this week.  Pour 24 is located inside the NY NY Hotel & Casino, near Coyote Ugly.  It is only a bar, with 24 taps, most of which are excellent craft beers.  You can check out  Taplister for the complete and up to date listing of beers.

Because this is a bar only, they do not serve food, but people are welcome to pick up a slice, or a Nathan's hot dog or pretzel and bring it into the bar area to enjoy.  Depending on the size of the group and interest, we might also swing by another of the establishments in the NY NY, such as Nine Fine Irishmen.

The group should be gathering around 5:30, if you self park, you want the third floor next to the right entrance, just walk down the ramp and into the casino.

The rest of the month is shaping up as follows:

March 11th - Big Dogs Draft House (Craig & Rancho)
March 13th (Road Trip!) - MonteLago Village Beer Fest
 - See their website for more details!
March 18th - Freakin Frog or Cancelled due to St Patricks Day
March 25th - Las Vegas Twestival Caramel Bar and Lounge located inside Bellagio Resort and Casino from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m - See their website for more details!

Wk 8 - Freakin Frog

We decided to meet at the Frog this week, for a small gathering.  We actually sat at the bar the entire night and had a small rotating crowd.  But good conversation as always and good beer, of course.

It was a group decision to leave the Frog as our usual meeting place, but we are working our way back there with a once a month or so visit.  The vibe has changed quite a bit since a year ago, the loud live music rarely starts before 10, the ambient music is now jazz or light rock.  Visually the place is more well lighted and an increase in tap prices has driven out some of the college crowd.  All these changes have worked in our favor to begin to frequent it on occasion.

Wk 7 - Big Dogs Draft House

Another tapping party led us out to the Draft House for their War Dog IPA, another excellent brew from that establishment.  We also caught the start of the cask conditioned kegs, this weeks was the Holy Cow Pale Ale.

Between the great food, awesome service, tap parties and now the cask conditioned kegs debuting every Thursday... Draft House is definitely becoming our NW area staple.  Now we just need to convince a few of the folks that think this is the boonies to venture out here once in a while.

Wk 6 - Fadó Irish Pub

A late but frequently rotating crowd attended last evening, in our debut at Fado.  Most everyone enjoyed a round of the Guiness Mac & Cheese off the happy hour food menu.  The large selection of traditional pub beers included bottomless Stella until 7pm and $4 Blue Moons.

Fado has a lot of space and plenty of places for a large group to spread out, but they did fill up later in the evening and their open mic kicked off at 9pm.  All in all a good time though and definetly a place we will need to visit again in the future.

Next week we are eyeing up the Hard Rock, not sure of the crowd due to the big events happening on Friday night, our second #SnugCrawl and the gala premiere of the Cirque show Viva Elvis.  More details on next weeks meeting will be posted on Facebook this weekend.

Wk 5 - Freakin Frog

Another week at the revitalized Freakin Frog, as we were coming off the GoWalla Swapmeet on Wednesday night, it seemed prudent to stay close to UNLV.  That did work to our benefit and we actually had a very respectable turn out.

The Freakin Frog had an excellent tap selection last night and we were joined by a couple new faces and few we had not seen for some time.  Although the crowd dwindled throughout the night, a few stayed on late into the evening.

Next week we will be trying a new venue, Fado Irish Pub in Henderson.

Wk 4 - Gordon Biersch

This week became the chance for us to finally start rolling out to other locations, and we were at Gordon Biersch.  Before you say, again, it was a different location, out in Summerlin at Boca Park.  They were rolling out their new seasonal HellesBock beer with a tapping party.

The tapping party at this location was a bit different from the ones held at the Paradise location, so although we did not really get to be part of the party, we had a good time.  The staff there was very accommodating to us and extended the bar only happy hour to us in the dining room.

A much quieter location we had the opportunity to have some interesting discussions with out the normal noise of some of the bars & restaraunts we frequent.

Wk 3 - Gordon Biersch

It's raining in Vegas, and it doesn't want to stop.  Weather has descended upon Vegas this week and some exchanging of tweets and a bad forecast for Thursday led to an impromptu Beer & Blog on Wednesday night.

In all likely hood Beer & Blog would have landed at Gordon Biersh this week, it has become our go to spot for smaller scale events.  They have a great happy hour menu and it's close by for a lot of folks.  It was a small crowd because of the weather and short notice.

Descisions for next week are pending finalization, but small crowds are expected due to the Cirque Blogger event on Monday night of next week.

Wk 2 - Freakin Frog

As expected, we had a great turn out for the official anniversary of Beer & Blog Vegas, probably over 2 dozen people attended.  The previously busy Freakin Frog across from UNLV, was also on the quiet side that evening, allowing us to take over.

It was great to see some people who had not been with for a while, and it was the biggest group we had since the end of summer.  No decisions were made for the next gathering, plans to be organzied are underway and hopefully starting in February the location will be known in advance, going forward.

Wk 1 - McMullans Irish Pub

The week 1 version of Beer & Blog was a nice turn out, even with CES in town.  We had about a dozen people and the normally bosterious McMullans was rather on the quiet side that evening.  Mainly we did a lot of catching up from the holidays and had a few drinks.

Freakin Frog was suggested at the following weeks location because it would be the One Year Anniversary of the Las Vegas edition of Beer & Blog.

First BNBLV of the Year

Tonight will be the year's first Beer N Blog and I expect it to be a fairly good turn out.  We will be meeting at McMullans Irish Pub, across from the Orleans Casino.  It is far enough off the strip that it should not be effected by CES foot traffic.  But accessible to most of our members, looking forward to getting the year kicked off on a high note!

Beer N Blog Vegas Year Two

We are quickly approaching the one year anniversary of the Las Vegas chapter of Beer & Blog! It has been a long year, we have had our ups and downs, but we are truly excited to see how we can grow both in numbers and learning this year.

Although we have many other resources, the official site is a bit of a pain to navigate, so I am setting up an alternative blog here, for ease of use. Which in turn will hopefully increase the number of blog posts as well.

Here is to the New Year, another great year for Beer & Blog in Vegas, hope see you all soon.

Cheers!
